BREEAM is a wide ranging form of environmental assessment. Applicable to all commercial developments, BREEAM assesses each building on a number of environmental principles. Points are awarded against each principle with an overall level given at the end of the process.
Some developers choose to use BREEAM as a marketing tool as even a BREEAM "Good" rating shows a significant improvement over and above Building Control minimum environemntal requirements. Overall BREEAM offers a standout badge of environmental stability both in the way a building has been constructeed and its ongoing environmental impact.
Other BREEAM rated developments are driven by legislation as all publicly funded developments much achieve a "Very Good" rating.
